
Born in Havana, Cuba, Andy Garcia is only five when his family flees to Miami. After attending Florida International University as a theatre major, he performed in regional theatre productions before moving to Los Angeles in the late 1970s to pursue a film and theatre career. He had his first role in 1981 in the pilot of the TV series “Hill Street Blues”.
After starring in Hal Ashby’s “Eight Million Ways To Die” (1986), he enjoyed in 1987 his first international hit opposite Kevin Costner and Sean Connery in Brian de Palma’s “The Untouchables”.
He then played in Ridley Scott’s “Black Rain” (1989), Mike Figgis’ “Internal Affairs” (1990), Kenneth Branagh’s “Dead Again” (1991), Stephen Frears’ “Hero” (1992), Bruce Robinson‘s “Jennifer 8” (1992), Barbet Schroeder’s “Desperate Measures” (1998), Gary Fleder’s “Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead” (1995) and Sidney Lumet’s “Night Falls on Manhattan” (1996). In 1991, he earned an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the illegitimate son of James Caan in “The Godfather: Part III” by Francis Ford Coppola (1990).
Two years later, Garcia made his producing and directorial debut with the documentary “Cachao… Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos” on bassist Israel Lopez “Cachao”, the co-creator of the Mambo. He portrayed afterwards the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca in Marcos Zurinaga’s “The
Disappearance of Garcia Lorca” (1996) and Lucky Luciano in Bill Duke’s “Hoodlum” (1997). He then starred in Tom McLoughlin’s “The Unsaid” (2001), James Foley’s “Confidence” (2003) and Philip Kaufman’s “Twisted” (2004), opposite Ashley Judd and Samuel L. Jackson. He worked three times with Steven Soderbergh: in “Ocean’s Eleven” (2001), “Ocean’s Twelve” (2004) and “Ocean’s Thirteen” (2007).
In 2000, Garcia played the lead character in the TV movie “For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story”, a biopic on legendary Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, for which he received an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. In 2001 with Cineson Productions, his own production
company, Garcia produced and starred in George Hickenlooper’s “The Man from Elysian Fields”. In 2004, he embodied the painter Amedeo Modigliani in Mick Davis’ “Modigliani”, which he also produced.
In 2005, Garcia produced and directed his first feature film, “The Lost City”, in which he played opposite Dustin Hoffman and Bill Murray. He earned Best Director Award and Best Film Award at the Imagen Awards in 2006.
Garcia is also a musician and composed several tracks of the original soundtrack of “The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca”. He also produced, wrote and performed songs for Andrew Davis’ “Steal Big Still Little” (1985), Richard Wenk’s “Just the Ticket” (1999) and “The Lost City” (2005).
He produced this year Raymond de Felitta’s “City Island”, in which he also starred.
