David Zucker

David Zucker, his brother Jerry and Jim Abrahams, also known as the ZAZ, knew one another during childhood - growing up in Shorewood, Wisconsin, and attending Shorewood High School in the 70s. While attending the University of Wisconsin in Madison the trio formed a theater group called "Kentucky Fried Theater". They moved to Los Angeles in 1972 and created their first professional satirical play five years later. This led to a successful sketch film, “The Kentucky Fried Movie” (1977), which was written by the group and directed by John Landis.
This was followed in 1980 by their Paramount breakout hit, “Airplane!”, a parody of disaster movies. Other ZAZ collaborations included the television series “Police Squad!” (1982), starring Leslie Nielsen as Lieutenant Frank Drebin, the war film mockery “Top Secret!” (1984), the comedy “Ruthless People” (1986), starring Bette Midler and Danny De Vito, and the feature films spinoffs of “Police Squad!”: “The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad” (1988), “The Naked Gun 2½: The Smell of Fear” (1991) and “Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult” (1994).
David Zucker then directed alone “BASEketball” (1998) and “My Boss Daughter” (2003). After producing Alfonso Arau’s “A Walk in the Clouds” (1995), with his brother Jerry, Joel Schumacher’s “Phone Game” (2002), he turned his sights on revitalizing the “Scary Movie” comedy franchise directing the third opus in 2003 and the fourth, co-written by Jim Abrahams, in 2006. Jim Abrahams wrote and directed “Hot Shots!” (1991), “Hot Shots! Part Deux” (1993) and “Jane Austen’s Mafia (1998). Jerry Zucker directed the box-office hit “Ghost” (1990), nominated for five Academy Awards and starring Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze, and the drama “First Knight” (1995), starring Sean Connery and Richard Gere, as well as the comedy “Rat Race” (2001). Also a producer, Zucker’s body of work includes producing Alfonso Arau’s “A Walk in the Clouds” (1995), with his brother David, and P.J. Hogan’s “My Best Friend’s Wedding” (1997). Jerry Zucker and his wife are currently producing Doug Liman’s “Fair Game”, starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts.
